For the Chicago corner store that still runs on a paper tape.

No barcode scanner. No new register. You photograph the register tape and the invoices from your suppliers, and Stock Radar works out what you bought, what it cost, what your margins really are, and what sales tax you owe.

What Chicago specifically gets right

A sales-tax figure is only useful if it is your city’s. These are the Chicago details the app already carries.

Sales tax, at the rate Chicago actually charges

The city sits at 10.50% on ordinary merchandise — state, county, city and transit stacked together. Stock Radar carries it, so nothing has to be typed in and nothing gets guessed.

Groceries are not exempt here — they are 1%

This is what makes Chicago different from every other place the app knows. Milk, bread, chips and unsweetened drinks carry a reduced 1% rate, while candy, soft drinks and prepared food carry the full 10.50%. Three rates on one till roll, and a shop that files them as two is filing a wrong return.

The split happens once, not every quarter

Every product carries its own tax class, set when you first photograph it. After that the reduced-rate line and the full-rate line separate themselves, every day, without anyone deciding again.

Lottery pays 5%, not 6%

Illinois pays less than California and New York on ticket sales. A rate borrowed from another state would overstate your lottery income all year — so the app carries Illinois’s own.

Straight about what this does not do yet.

Stock Radar carries Chicago, not the whole of Illinois. Illinois has over a thousand home-rule jurisdictions and a sourcing rule to go with them, and a shop in Peoria would be shown the Chicago number — which is why the app says Chicago rather than Illinois. If you are outside the city, tell us and we will say honestly whether your rate is one we can carry yet.
